The drastic change in weather conditions which caused widespread melting ice certainly contributed to the very poor set of results yesterday at the club's first points match of the year held on the canal at Manley. With 30 anglers taking part, only two managed to break a kilo, indeed most anglers really struggled to see the float disappear.
The match was split into 3 sections of 10, stretching from Snakes wood ( 30) to the bottom of Warnicombe straight (1) and it was here on peg 1 that the winner Pete Kingdon cleaned up with 2.650kg comprising several hand sized skimmers plus a small bream together with lots of small roach. Pete had all his fish on bread punch over liquidise fished at mid canal.
To complete his day, Pete also won the first golden peg of the season. Big congrats Pete !
Runner up from peg 19, on the outskirts of the wood, was Eric Priest with 1.570kg. Having not had a single bite after an hour, he switched to worm and caught two small jack pike over chopped worm and pinkie.
3rd place went to Dom Garnett on peg 26 near the sluice with 0.790kg. Dom started fishing the middle using punch over small pinches of bread and had several small roach until a pike scattered them. He then fished far across using pinkie and worm over crumb and had several perch and one small skimmer. Well done Dom !
4th and 5th places with to Paul Elworthy on peg 7 and Mark Branson on peg 6 whose catches were 0.660kg and 0.580kg respectively. Both caught lots of tiny roach in the middle on bread punch over liquidise. Well done guys !

2nd Points 11th February 2024 Grand Western Canal
Sunday's match was held along the Tidcombe to Glebelands stretch of the GW canal whereby 29 club members turned out to do battle for points once more. The weather was not good with cold bouts of gusty wind and rain throughout the day. This, together with bright sun at times making float spotting difficult and adding in a myriad of walkers, cyclists and canoeists to the mix generally made the day a painful one.
However, being a hardy lot, most anglers managed to catch something to earn valuable points and it was Dom Garnett on peg 4, who managed to win on the day with 2.010kg. Dom started well across on worm and pinkie fished over chopped worm, dead pinkie and a little ground bait. He had 2 skimmers and a pike during the first hour and later switched to bread punch in the middle and had a further 3 skimmers. Back on the worm, he finished off with some good perch and a further jack pike to end up clear winner.
Well done Dom !
Runner up on the day from peg 9 was Phil Bailey with 1.620kg. Phil like most, started on the punch, and had 4 small skimmers early on. He later found more skimmers well across on double pinkie over chopped worm along with 2 pike taken on the worm. Well done Phil !
In 3rd spot was Chris Danby on peg 16 by the holly bush in Glebelands. Chris weighed in with 1.510kg comprising 10 small skimmers and numerous roach and perch. He started fishing the punch over liquidise in the middle track and later switched to the far side fishing pinkie over ground bait to round off a really good day. Nice one Chris !
4th place went to Paul Carnell on peg 29 with 1.250kg which included a late small tench caught on worm, whilst 5th spot went to Pete Davey on peg 15 with1.160kg comprising a few small roach, perch and skimmers plus a small jack pike.

3rd Points 3rd March 2024 Grand Western Canal
Once again this season, the heavy recent rains gave rise to excessive colour in the canal at Holbrook bridge where the club held its 3rd club match of the season. This pea soup, combined with a heavy frost on the morning, made the fishing very hard indeed for the 26 participants. The match was pegged either side of the bridge and comprised 3 sections with pegs 1 to 9 located behind Minnows and pegs10 to 26 pegged on the Ayshford side of the bridge.
Top angler on the day from peg 4 was Ray Slack with 3.490kg. Ray pole fished the middle channel over chopped worm and ground bait and caught a dozen skimmers plus a few roach to give him a well earned 10 points. He used a small piece of worm on a size 18 hook throughout the match.. Big congrats Ray, the mightiest angler on the day, to quote Youtube's Alan Norrish ( fish on tv )
Runner up from peg 18 on the Ayshford side, was Mark Branson with 3.175kg. Mark's catch was a big bream plus approx. 20 small rudd all caught on double pinkie fished over chopped worm and ground bait down the middle. Well done Mark !
In 3rd spot, just 2 pegs away on 16, was Martin Heard with 3.000kg comprising around 30 roach plus one skimmer. Martin alternated between bread punch fished over liquidise down the middle and later fished double pinkie over crumb to complete the catch. Nice one Martin !
Richard Higgs ( peg 2) took 4th spot with 2.800kg, comprising one bream plus bits whilst Mike Pickford ( peg 15) was 5th with 2.350kg also comprising a bream plus bits, Mike fished a waggler and had his fish on bread. Well done guys !

4th Points 24th March 2024 Stafford Moor
Sunday's club match featured the annual trip to Stafford Moor with 27 anglers taking part in what proved to be a highly productive day for many of them. The match was split across 2 lakes, Willow and Woodpecker, with a set of club points available for each. Thankfully, conditions were very good and the weights were correspondingly pleasing.
Willow
Winner on the day from peg 10 was Gary Butler with 43.300kg. Gary started on the pole and had several carassios on corn but then switched to bomb and 8mm pellet, feeding same ( plus a lot more for the ducks ) and never looked back. He finished up with 44 small carp for a blinding win and 10 well earned section points. Big congrats mate !
Runner-up from peg 19 was Mark Branson with 32.200kg. Mark caught on a small guru hybrid feeder with 8mm pellets and wafters to start tight against far bank. Then switched to bomb when it slowed, caught on soft / hard pellets plus meat, a few bigger carp on worms over groundbait later in the match.
3rd spot went to Dom Garnett on peg 4 with 30.325kg. Dom had most of his fish well across on both method and pellet feeder with 8mm pellet being the most successful hook bait on the day. He also had a few carassios and carp on short pole later using pellet. Great result Dom !
4th spot went to Mike Pickford on peg 1 with 28.275kg. Mike had all his carp on feeder fished 8mm pellet. Nice one Mike !
Woodpecker
Winner and top weight on the day from peg 8 was Wayne Smallridge with 79.190kg. Wayne started on the pole with a few silvers but quickly switched to bomb and 8mm pellet against the end of the island and caught steadily throughout the match for an exceptional win. Well done Wayne !
Runner-up from peg 2 was Eric Priest, just 3ozs behind the winner, with 79.100kg. Eric started on the pole but soon switched to a small method feeder well across and started to catch steadily using 8mm's or 6mm wafters. He also had trouble with pellet loving ducks !
In 3rd place was Steve Manley on peg 19 with 51.850kg. Steve fished the bomb just past half way and fed 6 and 8mm pellets little and often. Best hook bait was 8mm pellet. Well done Steve !
4th place went to Simon Maunder on peg 14 with 44.625kg. Simon had all his fish on 8mm pellet fished well across via a bomb feeding same. Nice one Simon !

5th Points 14th April 2024 Grand Western Canal
Sunday's match was well supported once again with 27 club anglers taking part. Conditions were fair, the rain had taken the day off and everyone had a spring in their step as if to say Tench season was about to unfold. However, although there were several tench caught on the day, the bulk of them came from the Sellake end, indeed, the Greenway cut section proved really hard with only half the anglers breaking a pound.
From a points perspective, the match was split into 3 sections, one each side of Sellake bridge and the 3rd section in Greenway cut but it was the first section which produced the overall winner on the day. Paul Blake, from permanent peg 3, blew the opposition away with a great catch of 8.200kg comprising 2 bream, 2 tench and some skimmers which were all caught using worm hook bait fished far across on the 12m pole line. Paul did use plenty of ground bait to hold the fish in his swim. Bit congrats Paul on a great result and 10 club points !
Runner-up on the day, from peg 21 in the bay, was Gary Butler with 5.750kg. His catch comprised 3 good tench all caught in the first hour, again, far across on the 12m line using worm hook bait over cup-fed chopped worm and ground bait. Gary also had several small roach and perch to complete the catch. Well done Gary, another fine 10 pointer !
Third spot from peg 13 near Sellake bridge was Martin Heard with 4.650kg. Martin started on the bread punch in the middle and caught decent rudd steadily for the first hour. When this went quiet, he switched to the far bank and trapped 2 small tench plus several perch to complete the bag. Best bait, again, was worm over chopped worm and caster. Well fished Martin !
4th and 5th places went to Jez Rostrum and Rich Higgs respectively. Jez, drawn on peg 25 in the bay, had 4.420kg comprising 3 tench plus a few bits fishing well across on maggot over ground bait, whilst Rich, next door on peg 24, had 4.200kg and he too had 3 tench but had these on the worm and caster cocktail. Well done guys !

6th Points 19th May 2024 Avalon
Fishing was somewhat patchy at the club's latest match fished on Sunday at Avalon fishery with around half the contestants struggling to get bites. This was thought to be a combination of sudden change in air pressure and fish spawning, however, there were some good weights amongst the 18 contestants who took part and the guy who took top honours on the day was Gary Butler, from permanent peg 30, with a weight of 38.270kg. Gary's catch comprised 12 carp all caught via bomb and hair rigged 8mm pellet to the island feeding same plus 3 further lumps caught down the margin using luncheon meat. Big congrats Gary on a fine win !
Runner-up on the day, from peg 12, was Mark Webber with 34.670kg. Mark was biteless for the first 2 hours and then the carp turned up in style. He managed to land 15 fish over the remaining time, again, using 8mm banded pellet to the island. Instead of using the straight bomb he used a conventional cage feeder filled with groundbait and pellet. Well done Mark !
Third on the day was Martin Heard on peg 20 with 30.560kg. Martin started out on the long pole fishing 6/8mm pellet up in the water but this proved fruitless so he later switched between bomb, pellet feeder and pellet waggler far across to the island using pellet and managed to keep the odd fish coming. Nice one Martin !
4th place went to Neil Raybould on peg 9 with 22.990kg. Neil had a few carp on 8mm pellet fished well across but when bites dried up he managed a few more carp on triple maggot bait. Good switch Neil !

With the points league now at the half way stage in the season, current leader Dom Garnett is well clear of the field with 55 points. EP and Mark Branson are in 2nd with 44pts, closely followed by Gary Butler on 41 points. Next points match is at Summerhayes on 9th June with the Pairs final a week prior at Little Yeo on 2nd June.

Sunday's points match was held on Longs lake at Summerhayes with a total of 19 club anglers turning out to do battle once again. The weather was fair, if not somewhat windy, but most guys managed to find a few carp either over against the island or tight down the margins.
Top weight on the day from peg 32 was Gary Butler with 25.420kg. Gary fished a long pole to the island and had 14 carp all on banded 8mm pellet feeding same very sparingly. He did manage a single carp down the edge but most of the action was over on the far side. Well done Gary for another fine win !
Big smile from runner-up, Phil Madans, who weighed in with 23.900kg from peg 8. Phil had all his 12 carp using paste fished up tight against the nearby lily bed. He had to utilise strong terminal gear in order not to lose many in the lilies. Well done Phil !
3rd overall from next door on peg 6 was Martin Heard with 23.000kg. Martin decided not to fish against the lilies but opted for a 6m line where he loose fed 6mm pellet steadily. Successful hookbait was banded 6mm pellet and he managed 15 carp in total. Nice one Martin !

After having completed 7 of this year's 12 points match series, Dom Garnett is clear leader with 63 points with Eric Priest, Gary Butler and Mark Branson his nearest rivals but, as always at this time of year, there is a long way yet to go and anything can happen !

The latest in the club's 12 match series was held yesterday on the canal at Greenway with 25 clubmen in attendance. Although the weather was fair, the tench were not in much of a feeding mood either pre or post spawning ? The match was spread over 3 sections from the old dam at Sellake to Greenway bridge and it was the Greenway end for a change which produced 2 of the top 5 weights on the day.
Top rod on the day from permanent peg 36 on Greenway straight was Eric Priest with 3.920kg comprising 2 good tench and lots of small roach and rudd. EP fished the far bank at 11m for the first hour but, with very little to show for it, he switched to fishing single maggot on an 18 hook at 8m over loose fed caster and had lots of roach interspersed with some good rudd. He later went back on the 11m line and managed to catch 2 good tench on worm to complete the day.
Runner up from peg 9 at Sellake was Phil Bailey with 3.550kg. Phil set his stall out at 10m fishing worm over chopped worm and caster and caught 3 tench during the session plus several perch including one good specimen. Nice one Phil !
3rd spot went to Ken Penberthy down at peg 4 with 3.190kg. He caught 2 tench and lots of perch on worm fishing long pole over worm and caster. That was certainly worth the walk Ken, well done mate !
4th place went to Mark Branson from peg 44 near Greenway bridge with 2.980kg. Mark had one tench plus a decent jack pike as well as some bits all caught on worm well across over chopped worm and caster. Tiring walk Mark ?
5th spot was won by Rich Higgs down at Sellake on peg 20 with 2.480kg. Rich had one tench plus several roach and perch all on the worm and maggot fished over choppie and caster.

9th Points 21st July 2024 Lakeside/Little Yeo
Sunday's club match was held across both Little Yeo and Lakeside fisheries with 22 club anglers taking part in all, thus 11 on each lake. The draw for pegs was held at Tesco car park and the event was treated as two separate matches for both club points and prize money. Conditions were good and although Lakeside generally fished the better of the two, most people had a reasonable day's sport.
Lakeside
Top weight on the day from permanent peg 11 was Eric Priest with 35.650kg. His weight comprised 17 carp, 2 of which were around the 10lb mark. He also had a bream as well as a Tench and some skimmers to complete the haul. Top bait was sweetcorn fished over 4mm pellets and most of the carp were caught in the margins fishing short pole and red hydro elastic with Guru XS 16 hook tied to 0.17 hook length.
Runner up from peg 15 was Mark Branson with 31.875kg. Mark had most of his carp fishing the paste in the margins and although slightly fewer in number, he had better quality fish with at least 3 doubles as part of his great catch. Needless to say, his margin pole was the order of the day combined with beefed up pole rigs. Well done Mark
Third on the day, directly opposite from Mark on peg 16, was Chris Danby with 22.175kg. Chris fished his pole top kit first off and had several good skimmers and roach on either corn or meat but then latched into a real lump of a carp which he managed to net, eventually. His main success though was down both micro-fed margins fishing pellet one side and corn/meat down the other and he caught carp steadily throughout the match. Well done Chris !
Little Yeo ( Bobslake)
In first place was Martin Heard with a weight of 36.675kg. He fished shallow at 16m, feeding 6mm and fishing the same on the hook- also taking some carp at the same distance using a method feeder. Two margin fish completed the job.
Second place was Pete Davey with 29.550kg who fished to the back of the island. He had a slow first hour, but by keeping a steady supply of loose fed 4mm pellets going in, he settled the fish and caught over a dozen on method feeder with 8mm pellet on the hook, as well as 4 on the pole.
Third was Mike Blake, who used just a top two kit for most of the match! A bold decision- but it paid off with some excellent carp in close, including two doubles. He fished corn or meat on the hook over crushed expander groundbait. He also had a couple on the tip for good measure to weigh in 26.525kg.

Sunday's match at Summerhayes ( Longs ) was a tough affair with 21 anglers taking part in the quest for points. With lower water and oxygen levels at this time of year, the fish certainly proved hard to catch and weights were correspondingly down.
Top weight on the day was Martin Heard from permanent peg 32 with 34.600kg. Martin, having hardly caught a fish in the first 2 hours, concentrated on fishing in close on a top 3 kit fishing 6mm expanders over a little micro pellet. He finished up with over 30 small carp to complete a fine win and 10 club points. Well done Martin !
Runner-up on the day, from peg 6 , was Mark Webber with 27.650kg. Mark had most of his 15 carp fishing a top 4 up against the lilies using paste over micros and ground bait. He also had 4 carp to his right in the margin using corn and maggot. Well done Mark !
Third spot went to Pete Davey from peg 11 with 26.100kg. Pete had all his 15 carp via a method feeder and 8mm pellet fished up tight against the island. Nice one Pete !
Fourth place was won by Les Lloyd down on peg 25 with 25.700kg. Les found bites hard to come by in the first half of the match so ended up fishing the margins with worm or maggot over ground bait. He ended up with a total of 8 good sized carp plus silvers. Well done Les !

11th Points 18th August 2024 Avalon
The latest club match, held on Sunday at Avalon fisheries and supported by 22 club anglers, proved a tough affair with bites hard to come by for most of the guys. Probably, the main reason for this was due to the presence of a very strong blustery wind making casting to the far bank difficult coupled with the fact that there had been a match held on the same road bank the day before.
However, there were still some good weights not least of which came from peg 35 on the day with Paul Blake taking top honours with 34.445kg. Paul targeted the far bank with both pellet waggler and bomb using 8mm banded pellet and managed a total of 15 carp in all. He fed 8mm's via catapult the whole time and caught all his fish on a size 16 hook to 0.19 hook length. As well as winning first prize for the match, the icing on the cake came when he picked up the Golden Peg prize to end a memorable day. Well done and big congratulations Paul !
Runner-up from peg 25 was Gary Butler with 33.225kg. Gary's catch comprised 13 carp all caught via a small bomb and 8mm banded pellet fished across tight up to the end of the island. He too fired 8mm's across steadily throughout the match. Nice one Gary !
3rd spot went to Martin Heard from peg 44 with 27.440kg. Martin totalled 9 carp, he had 5 across via the pellet waggler and 8mm pellet with a few also coming on a 16m pole fishing 8mm pellet shallow. Well done Martin !
4th place went to EP from peg 31 with 26.675kg. He had 9 carp all via the bomb and 8mm's fished out in open water.

With only one club points match left in the series, it'll be a nailbiter of a finale with 5 anglers in the frame for top spot so the final match which is on Sunday,15th September at Lakeside/Little Yeo will prove decisive in determining this year's champion !

12th Points 15th September 2024 Lakeside/Little Yeo
The final points match of the season held yesterday across both Little Yeo and Lakeside turned out to be a real tense affair with the top 4 title contenders all drawn on the same lake at, namely
Lakeside. The weather was fair but it took a while for the carp to switch on, but switch on they did for eventual winner ,Gary Butler, from permanent peg 24 with 41.450kg. Gary had a great start by landing his first carp of the day which weighed over 8kg. Finding bites hard to come on the long pole, he switched to the inside margins and never looked back. He caught a total of 18 carp and virtually all were caught using 8mm banded hard pellets over a bed of pot fed 6mm pellets. Gary, not only won the match convincingly, but also took the 2024 league title for the second consecutive year by a margin of a single point. Well done and big congrats mate !
Runner up at Lakeside was Phil Bailey on peg 15 with 32.950kg. Phil had a slow first half of the match but took several carp in the last few hours fishing the margins, including 5 fish over 10lbs each, to secure second place. Successful bait was dead maggot fished over lots of ground bait. Well done Phil, all I could do was watch you mate !
Third place went to yours truly, EP, on peg 15 opposite with 25.250kg comprising 12 carp and all caught on 6/8mm banded pellet.
Little Yeo
Bobslake produced some very good results with top weight on the day going to Paul Blake from permanent peg 10 with 46.270kg. Paul had lots of carp on two main lines; he fished paste at 5m over micro pellet and also fished meat and corn across to the island at 14m. Apart from winning the match , he also won the Golden peg for a second time this season. Big Congrats Paul for a fine result !
Runner up from peg 15 on the island was Mark Branson with 38.090kg. Mark mainly fished the paste at 10m over 4mm pellet and then later switched to the inside using the same to complete a great day. Well done Mark !
3rd spot went to Simon Maunder over on peg 9 with a weight of 28.400kg.Simon had most of his carp on a bunch of dead maggots fished over ground bait and was particularly successful down the margins. Nice one Simon !
So, the eventual Top 10 qualifiers for the Club Final in October are now known and are as
follows : Gary Butler, Eric Priest, Martin Heard, Dom Garnett, Mark Branson, Paul Blake, John Hill, Phil Bayley, Steve Manley and Craig Morris. Well done to all those guys. Top Twelve Qualifier 29th September 2024 Oak Tree
Sunday's 10 man qualifier, held at Oaktree bottom pond, was a wet and windy affair but everyone did manage to catch fish at least. The weights were low as expected, indeed, some anglers just fished the feeder due to the gusty nature of the wind. Only 3 anglers actually weighed in at the end with top weight on the day, from a peg opposite the car park not far from the stump, was Mike Blake with 17.100kg. Mike caught 6 carp, two of which were caught on feeder tactics, whilst the rest were had on the pole using meat hook bait.
Runner-up was Mark Webber from peg 4 on the car park side with 12.920kg. Mark had some smaller carp, again using meat, fishing the pole at 8 metres.
3rd spot went to Simon Maunder from peg 6 near the outfall with 11.820kg. Simon had all his carp on dead red maggot over micro's.
Commiserations to Simon in just missing out on a place in the club match final in two weeks time and indeed to everyone else who missed out but big congrats to Mike and Mark for making it to the final at Lakeside on 13th October.

Top Twelve Final 13th October 2024 Lakeside
This year's club match final was held at Lakeside on Sunday with the top 12 anglers in the points league fighting it out for bragging rights. With the recent heavy rains combined with a sudden sharp drop in temperature, everyone knew the fishing was going to be hard and that was the way it proved. Bites were very hard to come by and it was down to who could catch the big carp early on which would dominate the final results.
Several anglers did manage to catch some big early carp not least of which was John Hill on peg 2 with 2 beauties of 7kg each; Martin Heard had a really big specimen carp of 20lb also in the first hour whilst Mike Blake and Craig Morris both had double figure carp, again in the first hour.
However, after 6 hours there was only one man who was going to win the match, namely, Martin Heard from peg 4 who caught steadily throughout the match using 4mm soft pellets on long pole feeding same. Martin had 14 carp in total which weighed a total of 31.250kg.

Runner up on the day from peg 22 was Craig Morris with 23.155kg. Craig fished 8mm pellet at full pole extent close in to the margins feeding same. He caught 12 carp in all so well done to Craig for a fine result.
3rd spot went to Mike Blake on peg 11 with 18.555kg. Mike's catch comprised 6 carp five of which were caught close in on 8mm pellet whilst the big specimen was had on the feeder.
4th place went to John Hill from peg 2 with 18.400kg. As mentioned earlier, John had 2 really big fish early on via the feeder and PVA bags. He later had a few silvers as well as another good carp to complete the day.
